Milena who is 9 and horse-crazy…heck animal-crazy…decided she wanted to do something special for all her Horse and Pony friends in our small neighborhood.
I asked my Sister-in-law, who owns horses, what recipe we should use and what was good and not good to give to horses. I know crazy horse people can be very picky about what they give their horses. Which is totally understandable. So she said as long as we omit sugar we would be good to go.
So, I searched the internet for a horsey treat recipe…Who the heck knew there were so many……..ugh! I made up my own recipe out of all the others as they were all similar. ON the 22nd of December Milena set to work on the Horse treats.
(45 treats depending on size.)
1/2c Rolled oats
1/2c Quick oats
1/2-3/4c unsweetened Applesauce
1/2c or one large carrot, finely grated
1/2c whole wheat flour
1 apple, finely chopped
some molasses to get desired texture.
1) Preheat oven @ 350*f. Cover a cookie sheet with parchment paper or mat.
2) mix all ingredients together. I added the molasses at the end to get to a good sticky texture.
3) We used a tbsp scoop and rolled the mixture into balls with our hands.
4) Place on cookie sheet and bake for 18-20 mins or until set.
Milena had 3 Icleandic Ponies at D&A’s. 2 large horses(quarter horses? I’m not up on all the horses out there.)at J&T’s and 2 more horses at our Dutch Mennonite Neighbors behind us. She had enough treats to put 9 treats for each horse into separate baggies. She then put them in pretty gift bags for each house.
I walked her to the D&A’s, Milena’s favourites…3 Icelandic Ponies that graze in the field across from our yard all summer. 🙂 D happened to be driving his big backhoe into his yard at the time. He helps plow out a lot of the neighbors driveways around us. He was so amazed that Milena would do such a wonderful thing for their Ponies. He let her give them 3 treats each right then and there. Oh my heart swelled for her. I was literally crying with excitement for Milena. She is like me…finds it hard to make human friends. So to be able to give her Pony friends a Yule treat was so awesome!
While we were standing there waiting for her to give out her treats, the next neighbor T and her grown daughter ended up walking by. I ran over and explained that Milena had made these treats and blah blah blah. T was just as surprised that Milena had done such a nice thing. She sent her daughter over later with a Christmas Thank you card and a Candy cane for both girls.
We decided to wait until the next day to deliver our Mennonite neighbors treats. Milena was feeling overwhelmed and cold.
As we walked into our driveway, our neighbor D, showed up with his quad and snowplow attachment. He said he wanted to plow our driveway as a thank you for the gift. How awesome is that?
What a wonderful experience for Milena.
